Acknowledgement: The idea of writing this book took root when reading the sports section of old Mt. Vernon Optic-Herald newspapers. When reading the columns of the old Optic-Herald, I noticed the slow start of football in Mt. Vernon High School, and as time passed more fans began to get behind and push for a successful program. A special thanks to Optic-Herald for the newspaper records. Also, thanks to Harold Jones, Graford Jones and Weldon Brewer for their columns in the paper told as they lived it as members of the teams. Also, thanks to Jerry Tittle for furnishing pictures and articles from his dad's scrapbook. And thanks to the Franklin County Genealogical Society for the use of their library and equipment. For the reader to get a better feel of the people and the times, I've tried to maintain the wording and phrases as they were written in that time.
